The following series of photos were taken along the Thai – Burmese railway, Otherwise known as the Death Railway. Built by the Japanese Imperial army in the 1940’s using prisoners of war as forced labour. Many of whom never survived the ordeal.
If you would like to read more about the railway and its history wikipedia has a basic article on the railway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Railway
This is only a small documentation of the journey from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok (the current end of the line)It is a beautiful journey with a horrific past. One that I think more people should undertake.
For many people of European or North American descent. WW2 in Asia is greatly overlooked.Â
And rightfully so. Europe was the focus for many people. However, if you are Australian, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Thai, Filipino, Korean, Chinese, or any other of the host of nations the Japanese imperial army conquered at that time. This location would mean far more than some Far flung location in Europe.Â
The railway now is seen as a holiday get away to Kanchanaburi. A small and not terribly significant town not far from Bangkok.Â
The rivers and small resorts in the area are very pretty. The area is generally beautiful. Which makes the story of the railway all the more horrific.Â
Â
Well worth a visit. Oh and the food in town isn’t too shabby either. Â
