In late 2006 I began working in Saigon at a small magazine called Saigon Inside out. Shortly after (approximately three issues to be exact) Saigon inside out became AsiaLIFE magazine.
In late 2008 AsiaLIFE had a mini meltdown. (this is an extremely truncated account of the events and I will not elaborate further) and the then editor broke off and started his own publication.
In the wake of all the insanity I got very lucky and became the Photo Editor of the newly restarted AsiaLIFE.
To be completely honest, I had no right to be a photo editor at that stage in my career. I had only been doing photography as a paid professional for about a year and a half.
However, desperate times call for desperate measures I guess. The ownership at the magazine put their faith in me to make the AsiaLIFE look good every month.
Fast forward to March 2014 and seven years have whipped by in a torrent of photographs. And I have decided that it was time to move on from the magazine. It was a hard decision to make.
Mainly because I rather enjoy a steady pay cheque. Secondly because I genuinely enjoyed working for the magazine.
Working at AsiaLIFE was an incredible creative and collaborative experience. I received an education in editorial photography like no other. I worked with all types of creatives. Every day was a new shoot with new challenges.
I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my photography career.
At the time of this post my freelance career has been taking up more and more of my time. I could no longer commit enough time to the magazine. In honour of my time at AsiaLIFE I have created a mosaic of almost every cover I have been privileged to help create.
There are only three covers missing from my count.
The very first cover I photographed. I could not find the digital file. Two others from the middle years because they were very photoshop heavy. I feel it was not my photo anymore.
Having said all this. It is still a mosaic of 54 covers. It is not very often that a person gets to see their development over the course of the better part of a decade all in one go. There you have it. I hope you enjoyed looking at the covers and reading the magazine as much as I did making it. Although I doubt that. It was a tremendous amount of fun;)
